Aquaria On Steam

Aquaria happens to be one of the best indie games I’ve ever played.  It was made by a small team of developers and won some award or something in 2007 for best Independent game.

The reason I like it so much is because it fuses so many of my favorite game types - like classic retro side scrolling games (Metroid, Castlevania) and Zelda, and puts them into one polished package.  Not to mention it’s built around computer mouse and keyboard controls.

It’s $15 bucks if you buy it before the 31st of December, a good deal and it helps support indie devs to boot.  Trust me, it’s a fun game and well worth the $15 if you like retro style games.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh and God Of War III Trailers

The Watchmen movie might be good, but I’ll probably say it sucks.

The Watchmen game, however, looks halfway decent, and is a prequel to boot.  Combat looks decent, as you get to play as both Night Owl and Rorschach.  Of course, the appeal of The Watchmen, to me, was the fact that there wasn’t so much of a focus on combat in the comics as there was character development and interaction, which a lot of comic book movies and games don’t seem to get correct.

And a painfully short God of War III trailer.  God of War II pushed the limits of the Playstation 2, and to this day is one of the best looking games on any the Playstation systems.  Of course, my Playstation 3 is serving nicely as a $499 movie player, and aside from Metal Gear Solid 4, I haven’t really purchased any games for it.  But a next gen God of War?  Yes please.

The Old Republic first Gameplay Footage

Not much new information, but the footage of the combat looks promising - even if it’s early alpha footage.

Operation Anchorage

No, that’s not a picture from some gay Halo game - Fallout 3: Operation Anchorage is the first of three announced DLC packs, now detailed by Bethesda in an interview with IGN.  The addon will put you into a simulation of the Anchorage Reclamation - a frontline of the China vs American war in Fallout’s alternate timeline - before the bomb dropped.

Anchorage won’t increase the level cap - you can expect that to happen in the third set of DLC.

At any rate, exciting stuff.  Completely different art style, more weapons and more stuff to do.

New Ten Part Battlestar Webisodes start Friday

In perhaps one of the most feeble attempts to hold me over till next month, SciFi has announced a ten part web series “The Face of the Enemy“, leading up to the show’s finale next month.

“The Face of the Enemy” follows the action and suspense inside a stranded Raptor carrying a group of passengers, including Lt. Felix Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) and a Number 8 Cylon (Grace Park). When passengers suddenly start dying in alarming ways, fear, panic and chaos erupt within the confines of the small ship as suspicion grows that there is a killer among them. Michael Hogan (Col. Tigh) and Brad Dryborough (Lt. Hoshi) also star.

“The Face of the Enemy” is written by Jane Espenson and Seamus Kevin Fahey and is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

The full schedule: Dec. 12: Chapter 1; Dec. 15: Chapter 2; Dec. 17: Chapter 3; Dec. 22: Chapter 4; Dec. 24: Chapter 5; Dec. 29: Chapter 6; Dec. 31: Chapter 7; Jan. 5: Chapter 8; Jan. 7: Chapter 9; and Jan. 12: Chapter 10.

Personally, I’d rather see a ten part webisode on what Caprica Six does in her free time.  She’s a hell of a toaster.

Fallout 3 HD Texture Pack

And now, the real reason you bought Fallout 3 for the PC:  The HD texture pack - akin to Oblivion’s HD texture pack(s).  Makes the game look like it should on the PC - fucking amazing.

Come with me if you want to live: Terminator Salvation Trailer Leaked

I find it quite interesting to see all my childhood memories re-imagined and rebooted before my very eyes - sometimes for good, sometimes for worse.  Film makers certainly have access to better CGI and effects technology than they did two decades ago, but does enhanced CGI make for a better flick?  (No, says George Lucas.)  Elements like character development, interaction, and plot are more often than not lost under a load of computer effects and explosions.  Or flying hoverboard lightsaber fights.

Although, I think the Terminator franchise has held up relatively rather well - I wasn’t even alive when the first Terminator came out, but it was certainly one of my favorite childhood flicks growing up.  It’s a classic.  I’ve even learned to like the subsequent sequels and TV series (even though I spend most of the time oogling Summer Glau in the latter.)

I won’t pass judgement on Terminator: Salvation until I see it, of course, but the whole appeal of Terminator to me is the fact that you never really see the war ravaged future Sarah and John are always worried about.  It’s full of time paradoxes and some of the best car chase scenes ever recorded on film.  I just have a feeling that Salvation will be nothing more than a Sci-Fi flick with Patrick Bateman Bruce Wayne Christian Bale, sans Arnold.

We’ll see.  At least the trailer looks well made.  Even if it’s leaked and in Japanese.

The Punisher: War Zone

My place of employment is generous enough to allow me a decent amount of personal days a year.  I usually spend these days the way any other sane individual would:  by catching the earliest possible flick at the local theater, in order to avoid the masses of individuals who are not nearly as amused by my sarcastic and off color comments during the film.

Seriously, there’s just something about watching a movie in a theater when you’re the only person in the theater.  I sit in the dead middle of the theater, put my feet up on the chair in front of me, and grin like an idiot as I take in the entire movie, eating overpriced popcorn and sipping on an overpriced cherry coke.

Yesterday, I used my day to watch The Punisher:  War Zone.  Oddly enough, it was directed by some broad who really doesn’t have much of a director resume, but it just so happens it’s the best live action Punisher flick ever made.  And it didn’t even break the top five at the box office (Talking Animal Adventure 15 and Generic Mass Produced Vince Vaughn Movie topped it, among others.)  Being the narrow minded critic that I am, I can’t understand why this is.

Sure, War Zone is an almost two hour romp of almost non stop violence - but it’s quite obvious none of these fucking critics of the movie have ever once opened a Punisher comic.  Sure, it feels like an 80’s B action flick at times, but comparing The Punisher to The Dark Knight or Iron Man is quite unfair - the Punisher is not a superhero movie.

The Punisher has always been an Anti-hero - not a fucking Superhero.  There’s nothing “Super” about him.  Frank Castle is a pissed off guy with nothing to lose, and a grudge against the people that killed his family (ie. bad guys).  I won’t go into details of the movie, but it conveys Frank’s vigilante attitude pretty well.

If you’re a fan of the comic, War Zone is worth the eight bucks for admittance.  If you’re a douche nozzle reviewer or movie goer with no background of the Punisher comics, it’s not for you.  And if you just like action flicks, go see it.

Hell Freezes Over: Darkfall Online Release Date Announced

Well, the European launch date for Darkfall Online is official, and while no North American date has been announced, something is better than nothing, right?

January 22nd, 2009.  Not bad.  I’ll believe it when I see it, though.
