There really isn’t much TV drama out there now that I feel is as watchable or enjoyable as Breaking Bad. The Wire has been done for a while now, The Sopranos is but a distant memory, and Dexter has slowly been going downhill since season 1. While these aforementioned shows are all on cable TV, Breaking Bad is on network television – AMC. Even if AMC is owned by Sony, Breaking Bad has all the qualities and elements of an HBO or Showtime series.
Last night, the season finale aired, and while I was kind of let down by it at the time, giving it a full twelve hours to sink in has done a lot more to justify the ending. I was going to do a whole post analyzing the season and the final scenes, but I shaved today and my neckbeard isn’t thick enough.
What I can say in a much shorter space, is that Breaking Bad is still the best show on TV, hands down. The finale was a culmination of this season’s events, for good or worse, and has really set the stage for Season 3. Season 1 was fantastic, but Season 2 was so gripping and tense that I will miss not having it on to watch on Sunday nights now.
Cranston deserves another Emmy this year – his performance is so believable – right down to the way he “teaches science” to Jesse exactly as a Science teacher would – it’s perfect.
What I will say about the finale without spoiling too much – Heisenberg and Walt’s worlds are finally colliding – and in a very symbolic way at the end of the episode. At first I felt like the black and white scene was going to be a major character or two dying off – and I’m kind of bummed it wasn’t. But in a way, Breaking Bad mocked the viewers’ expectations of such a thing – and in turn mocked the kind of predictability most network TV shows are known for.
