TF2 Sniper update kinda detailed

The Sniper Rifle unlock, at least.

Which brings us back to the Sniper Rifle unlockable. In an effort to reduce some of the aggravation that other players feel towards the Sniper, we chose the goal of designing an unlockable that encouraged the Sniper to get a little closer to his target. We want him to give up some of his primary advantage in return for something else, so that enemies he kills feel like they were engaged with them, and feel like they could have survived if they’d just managed to fight a little better.

Up close, eh?  My initial thoughts – obvious thought was that the Sniper Rifle replacement would be another Sniper Rifle, just with a larger clip and decreased power, or something along those lines.  I’m willing to bet that the Sniper will end up getting an Assault Rifle of sorts instead.

But really, is this what TF2 needs?  Snipers running up close?  Team Fortress 2 is a vastly different game than it was two years ago, and while it’s still probably the most balanced and polished arena shooter around, its critical that that sense of balance be preserved.

Although Valve could do this correctly, and I’m sure they will.  The Sniper needs to remain a threat from far away, and if he gets some added utility up close, cool.  Jarate is actually a pretty good idea in this sense, as long as it wouldn’t be replacing the Sniper Rifle.
