Valve’s Robin Walker explains TF2 changes

Well, kind of explains it.  If you’re anything like me and have been wondering what the hell the this backpack shit was all about.

Shack: Will these items carry bonuses that impact gameplay?

Robin Walker: Right now they’re all cosmetic only, but it’s obviously more interesting if they become more than that, so we’re still thinking about that. Shipping them without gameplay changes seems like a good way to tackle the first problem, which is to ensure we don’t break our silhouette based class identification. It also starts us on another path that we’re interested in, which is allowing players to have some control over their appearance.

Is TF2 becoming more like an MMORPG?  Nah, doesn’t really seem like it.  Cosmetic items, though?  To be honest, just let the weapons become interchangable.  The best part of TF2 is how iconic the classes are.  Customization is something that really doesn’t need to be there.  Keep the game a test of skill – not of what items are the best.

Yo dawg, I heard you like collecting items. So we put WoW in your TF2.

It’ll probably be pretty awesome, considering TF2 changes generally trend toward good.
