Might be enough to get me to Reactivate my Warhammer Account

Warhammer Online is nearing it’s fourth month of operation – and while I had a fantastic time during the beta test, I couldn’t last very long during the live game itself.  Why?  Lack of spontaneous PvP that made beta so goddamn fun to play.  I don’t know why this was the case – Octavarium played on an Open-RvR server, Wolfenburg, which was different than the beta server’s Standard Ruleset, which could have been the issue, since the Core ruleset servers are designed to funnel players into a designated Open PvP area, as opposed to the “kill anyone, anywhere” mentality of the Open-RvR servers.  Or it could have been WoW players wanting nothing other than instanced PvP.  Who knows?

At any rate, it was one of my biggest, if not my biggest gripe with the game since launch.  A game that has so many large and expansive areas to PvP in needs to put a focus on that PvP – not just instanced, scripted “grab X object, attack X target, take object Y here” type of thing.

Today, Mark Jacobs detailed Mythic’s plans for improving oRvR – in the form of a RvR influence system, map and travel changes, RvR missions and quests, better Keep rewards, and a global oRvR “fame” system.

It’s a tall order, and I have thoughts of rerolling a Knight of the Blazing Sun in a couple of months if these changes turn out to improve oRvR.  I really think Mythic dropped the proverbial ball as far as RvR goes – Scenarios are fun, but a double edged sword, and with the way they’re implemented now, it would be difficult to change or remove them to add more incentive to do open RvR.

Props to Mythic and Mark for always being so straight forward with their plans, though.  We’ll see how this pans out.

  • I canceled my WAR account yesterday. No, it’s not that I don’t enjoy the game. I’m just finding I haven’t got the time to play it these days. In fact, I haven’t played much of anything on the PC, just the odd Xbox 360 (often Arcade) game to kill time.
Sadly, my account had just auto-renewed.
