Left 4 Dead Demo Impressions - Awwww, Bill!

The Left 4 Dead demo is capable of giving you the worst case of e-blue balls you’ve ever had.  It lovingly strokes and caresses your e-genitalia, bringing you ever so close to e-climax, before walking away and reminding you that November 17th is still a week away, leaving you alone to stroke your own e-stiffy….

Valve is a company, that, in my book, can do no wrong.  After playing the demo of Left 4 Dead, I can say that, yes, they still can do no wrong.

If you think you know what Left 4 Dead is like, think again - it’s nothing like the videos or screenshots portray - it’s intense, fast, and a testament to Valve’s ungodly amount of polish put into their games.

What’s good

Menu - The menu is the first thing you’ll see, and it’s rather surprising it’s not using the same generic Source engine menu Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 use.  It’s a nice change, but it’s also apparent that the game is targeted at a console audience as well….

Character interaction - Each character has his or her own “feel”, and a huge amount of voiced dialogue.  When you’re low on health, your team-mates will tell you to get patched up.  A team-mate dies, and your character might have a dismal comment to make on the whole situation.

More importantly, is the actual character design - each character plays the same, but they each offer a different perspective on the situation - Bill is a grizzled war vet, Zoey’s a spoiled whore, Francis is a closet homosexual, and Louis is the token Black Guy.  It feels like a generic horror survival movie - but plays anything but.

Enemy AI - This is where Left 4 Dead really shines.  The AI behind this game is truly next gen - fuck not only Silent Hill and Resident Evil, but also any other game claiming to be “next gen”.  Left 4 Dead is going to revolutionize survival horror.  Enemies are deadly, smarter than the players - they’re faster, and there are more of them.  The various boss monster types are a huge challenge as well - one hit kills and huge amounts of hit points make them deadly encounters which require full focus and group cooperation.

Likewise, the partner AI is a great addition as well - drop in or out of a game at your leisure, and a computer controlled character takes over for your spot, until you get back.

One week until Left 4 Dead comes out.  Can’t wait.
